Molemap

At Papillon, we are passionate about all things skin and we firmly believe that beautiful skin starts with healthy skin.

Having a Molemap skin check once a year ensures that skin cancers are diagnosed early. Our highly trained Melanographers will thoroughly check your skin to pick up any lesions of concern.

If they are left to grow, the surgery to remove them becomes more complex and may involve a skin graft or flap, leading to an unsightly scar and longer healing times.

Anyone over the age of 18 should have a yearly full skin check.  Anyone under the age of 18 who has a new skin lesion that is concerning them or has one that has recently changed should also consider having a skin check.

No, you do not need a referral to have a Molemap skin check at Papillon Skin Clinic.

Our Melanographer, who is a registered nurse specialising in the diagnosis and prevention of skin cancer, will take a history and enter all of your details into our system. You will be asked to strip down to your underwear, and the nurse will carefully look over your skin, including under your hair on your scalp between your toes, etc. They will use a special instrument called a dermatoscope to look at any lesions in detail.

Any lesion that they are concerned about will be photographed and sent to a secure Molemap server, where a dermatologist will look at the images and issue a report. This report is sent back to the doctors at Papillon and to your local doctor. You will also be encouraged to set up an account where you can access your photos and report. At the end of the skin check, our staff will ensure that you have another appointment made for you in 12 months.

There are three common skin cancers which include Basal cell Carcinomas, Squamous cell Carcinomas and Melanomas.  2 out of every 3 Australians will be diagnosed with a skin cancer before the age of 70.  Melanoma is the most serious of the skin cancers as it is more likely to spread to other parts of the body.

At Papillon, we have Mr. Salerno, who is a very experienced Plastic surgeon who specialises in skin cancer surgery.

Your GP can refer you to Mr. Salerno or another plastic surgeon of your choice. They will give you their opinion and discuss your treatment options.

They may elect to do a biopsy or, in some cases, they will proceed to complete excision. The nurse will contact you with the results. If you are diagnosed with Melanoma, then we will arrange an urgent appointment for you to see Mr. Salerno, who will arrange your surgery urgently. You may need follow-up at a specialist Melanoma clinic at the Alfred Hospital.
